Mini-Moon in Virginia

unnamed-21

Taking a long honeymoon right after the wedding was not possible for us. We decided to take our honeymoon a few months after our wedding. Even though we were waiting, we knew we did not want to go straight back to our place, work, and every day schedule the day after our wedding. We started to look into “mini-moon” locations for a short trip. After looking at a few options, we chose Salamander Resort as our mini-moon destination.

Salamander Resort is a luxury resort located in the beautiful town of Middleburg, Virginia. Located outside of Washington D.C., this resort is home to the horse and wine country of the area. Decor centered around equestrian, comfortable, and relaxing themes.

It contained a few restaurants right on property ( more information below) that offered delicious options. My favorite part was how they incorporated honey from their own bee hives, located on the hotel grounds. Trying the honey butter is a definitely must, and a must buy souvenir!

Atmosphere

One of the determining factors of how much I enjoy my stay at a resort is the overall atmosphere and theme. When I am on vacation, I want to feel like I am in a different time/place away from all my every day stress. Salamander Resort had an equestrian theme as a nod to their horses on property. Guests are able to ride horses during their stay for an additional fee. Anywhere you went in the resort, there was a sense of calm and peace surrounding you. Light paint colors, dark wood, and relaxing music followed you throughout the extensive building. Outside was a vast stretch of property to explore including a fire pit and life size chess pieces.

Rooms

Our room was a miniature version of what the lobby and the rest of the hotel portrayed- a small piece of luxury. It contained a seating area, makeup vanity, as well as a private balcony. Every night with turn down service, the staff would leave homemade scones by your pillows. ( What a way to live!).

Of course, having the fabulous bathroom was a nice plus as well. Oh, who am I kidding… it was fantastic! The bathroom even had a TV inside of it!

Activities

While Salamander is a relaxing spot to stay, it is always busy with activities for you and your family to participate in during your time there. Some of these activities include: Spa, hiking, yoga, horseback riding, and zip lining.

We enjoyed the spa where you were able to spend free time in a hot tub, heated chairs, an automated shower to stimulate rainforest, rain storm, and tropical storm water, and more. After the free time, we did the couple’s massage.

Dining

Salamander offered a wide variety of dining options on the resort grounds. Whether you wanted casual or more luxury atmosphere, you had everything at your fingertips. We loved being able to go to dinner at a nice restaurant or a charming pub without even leaving the resort. I think our favorite meal was breakfast, which we ate outside every morning. ( You MUST get the home fries!) Dinner at Harrimans was fantastic, and is definitely presented as their ” must eat” dinner spot. It is also where you can try their honey! One warning- the menu does change every season.

Surrounding Area

The resort we stayed at is nestled right in the center of the charming town, were boutiques, restaurants, and antique shops are located. One must try is the bakery with delicious sweets at a very reasonable cost. A grocery store is conveniently located for any  last minute purchases. With a short drive, you are also able to go to wineries located all around the area. Make sure to look at what wineries are around you, and their schedule. Most of the ones near us were closed because it was off-season and during the week.

Take Away Tips

No matter how you got about it, I recommend doing something special the day after your wedding. I know everyone has different work schedules, budgets, and time restraints but having time to reflect after your big day is really crucial. Do your research and find something that works best for you.

xoxo,

E.
